Stop overproducing. What is actually working on social right now

Raw content is beating polished, Instagram is handing the algorithm to users and LinkedIn is punishing engagement bait. What changed on social this month.

If you have spent the last month polishing Reels to within an inch of their life, we have news. The scruffy stuff is winning.

A single take truck driver lip sync hit 336 million views this month. No edit. No graphics. No agency gloss. Just a phone, a person and a moment people wanted to watch. Meanwhile perfectly produced brand content is quietly getting scrolled past.

That is the headline. Here is everything else that changed on social this month and what to do about it.

Raw content is outperforming polished content

Across Instagram and TikTok, single take, unpolished content is beating high production posts. That does not mean quality no longer matters. It means authenticity is the quality people are looking for.

For brands, this is genuinely good news. A day in the life clip, a quick tip filmed on a phone or a behind the scenes moment costs a fraction of a full shoot and is currently performing better. Save the big production budget for the content that needs it and let the everyday stuff be everyday.

Instagram just handed the algorithm to your audience

Instagram's new Your Algo feature lets people manually pick the topics they want in their Reels feed. Users can even lock in their top three interests for the rest of 2026.

Here is the catch. If your content is not clearly tied to a topic or niche, you risk being filtered out of feeds entirely. Vague, generic content now has nowhere to hide. Brands that know exactly what they are about, and post like it, will be the ones that stay visible.

Instagram also rolled out Replace Audio, which lets you swap the sound on an existing post or carousel without losing likes, comments or reach. Translation: your best performing evergreen content can be revived with a trending sound instead of reshooting from scratch.

LinkedIn is done with engagement bait

Comment YES if you agree posts are officially being detected and downranked. LinkedIn now rewards depth. Dwell time, saves and private shares matter more than reactions.

The format winning right now is the carousel. Native carousels and PDF documents get 3x the clicks of standard posts and 278% more engagement than video. And personal profiles get 561% more reach than company pages, which is a huge gap for professional services firms still posting everything from the company account.

External links are also being actively suppressed, with click through rates on links down nearly 30% year on year. Keep the value native. Post the insight on the platform rather than linking out to it.

TikTok wants you to finish the video

Completion rate is now the dominant ranking signal on TikTok, with the platform expecting roughly 70% or higher. Watch time alone is not enough anymore.

completion rate TikTok now expects. Watch time alone will not cut it.

The first hour after posting is also a test window driven by your existing followers. If your own audience is not engaging early, your reach suffers. So the brief for every TikTok is now simple: a hook that lands in the first 2 seconds and a payoff that rewards watching to the end.

Facebook might be worth another look

Referral traffic from Facebook to publishers has reportedly quadrupled year on year. If you wrote Facebook off as a link driving channel, it may be time to test it again, especially for offers, events and local promotion.

What this means for your marketing

Three things to take away.

Post more, polish less. Real beats rendered right now. Build raw, phone shot content into your plan alongside the produced pieces.

Get specific about your niche. Both Instagram and LinkedIn are rewarding brands with a clear topic and punishing the vague ones.

Put your people front and centre. Personal profiles are outperforming company pages by a huge margin. If your founder or team are not posting, you are leaving reach on the table.
